In poetry, everything has a meaning. Poetic writers use many elements to signal the audience in whichever direction they wish to. They use these elements to get their messages across so the readers understand the poem in a much deeper stance. One great poet that uses such intricate writing in his poems is Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Allan Poe uses several different literary devices in his major 1849 poem Annabel Lee. In his text he incorporates theme with imagery, symbolism, and form. These literary devices help lead the audience to the understanding of the overall meaning of the poem. Edgar Allan Poe s use of symbolism allows for the audience to understand how this gentleman feels about Annabel Lee. In the poem, the author uses symbolism when the narrator states, â€Å"For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee† (Poe 1849). Question: Do Ecosystem Services have Economic Value? Explain. Answer: Yes: There are certain environmental critics, who believe that the economic valuations of the ecosystem services are beneficial for the nature as it helps in protecting the natural resources of the nature. The economic valuation of the ecosystem services helped in protecting it resources by stating the fact that if there is an economical valuation of the natural resources then it will affect the human behavior. No: There are certain environmental critics who believe that the economical valuations of the ecosystem services are harmful for the nature. According to these critics it would encourage the capitalist mind set of the master-servant relationship and would encourage people to go for the protection of only those environmental resources, that good for the human kinds but not for the society in general. The task of ecosystem valuation is a topic that is controversial in nature. There are few economists, who believe that, the nature is something, where there should not be a price tag. Thus, the economists believe that there should not be any price tag attached with the ecosystem. On the other hand, there is another group of environmental economists, who believe that the ecosystem should have an economic value and only then, it could be protected for the future generation and for the greater human kind. The role of valuation of the ecosystem is a recent issue in the environmental philosophy, and thus it plays an important role in the environmental policy and decision-making process. The debate that is there on the value of ecosystem can be derived from two very different points of views and those are the anthropocentric and the non-anthropocentric view. The non-anthropocentric view stresses on the fact that the non-human species have certain values as well as moral in them. The anthropocentric view on the other hand, had an economic approach to the valuation of the ecosystem. A committee charged the first view or the non-anthropocentric view, while they try to assess the value of both the aquatic and the terrestrial ecosystem with the help of the economic method. Therefore, the report that was presented by the committee is mainly focused on that ecological system that can be captured by the economical value. The people who believe that the ecosystem or rather the ecosystem services should have an economic value, state the fact that the moral values could not reduce the destruction of the nature. Along with the economic growth and the growth of the population, depletion has increased and the moral argument became insignificant and insufficient. The only hope therefore, was, realizing the fact that the nature is essential for the overall economical development. The message that these environmental economists tried to convey was that without the nature there would be nothing left for the economy. Therefore, it is important to create a bridge between economy and ecology, so that both could go in hand in hand. Thus, the nature or the ecosystem is being provided with an economic valuation, which will help in the protection of the nature or the ecology. The people who have used the resources of the nature for economic purpose, they could only be convinced to protect the resources of the nature, by conveying the message that the natures resources have tangible financial values. Therefore, the values of the resources are the measurable values and thus, they should preserve and protected. In case of convincing the people who are using the natural resources for the economical purpose, moral argument would not be sufficient and thus there is a need to have an economic valuation of the ecosystem services. If this is one way of looking at the issue then there is another way to look at this issue as well. Another way includes the viewpoint of those environmental economists who have associated the dangerous side of this particular valuation of the ecosystem services. According to many environmental economists is if there is a price tag on the nature, then it will, have a negative consequences as well. One of the main reasons behind this is the PES or the payment for ecosystem services, which the environmentalists had criticized because they think that it is quite an alarming thing for the world. The rhetoric is a heated rhetoric and this particular rhetoric even prevented the Britain government to ell of their national forest even under fierce public opposition. According to many environmental critics, the PES transaction could even go wrong at certain circumstances, and this could happen mainly because of the question of the price that is attached to it. According to environmental criti cs even if a price is given to the ecological resources or to the ecosystem the question that remains whether any one has the legitimate right to sell of the natural resources or not. Especially in case of the developing countries, it is difficult to find legitimate owner for the natural resources because of the issues related to lack of documentation and political influence. The risk of perverse incentive remain attached to the payment schemes because if the system ask any landowner to create carbon bank then the land owner may plant genetically modified and even to non-native species to create it. At the same time, the economical valuation of the ecosystem services could discourage those phenomena that are good for the biodiversity but could bring in a bad effect for the human community. The things include disasters like fire, flood and other things. Moreover, the environmentalists point out that the climate is a joker and could change the whole array of this particular construction. The environmental critics do not support the system of providing economic value to the ecosystem services because they think that it is completely a capitalist view that could help in establishing the master-servant relationship again. The critics provide the examples of some past revolutions, such as the enclosure of common land during the eighteenth century in Britain, the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century, shattered the relationship human beings had with the nature. The farmers are turned to factory workers, who use to serve for the capitalist purpose. The critics believed the economic valuation of the ecosystem service would come at the cost o cultural and psychological upheaval. According to many critics and scholars if in the urban areas there is, a positive impact on the poor as well as on poverty then that would lead to the sustainable development of the cities. Therefore, sustainable developments of the cities are required because it would help in reducing the usage of those agricultural lands that are unnecessarily being used for the purpose of urbanization. The sustainable urban development make sure that the good quality of life is being offered to the people currently in the city and at the same time it ensures that the future generation could enjoy the same thing at the same time. Making the cities sustainable for the people include many things, such as mass transit. The use of public transit is a way to reduce traffic congestion that is there in the city. The use of public transit could actually help in reducing and could make the process of moving towards a sustainable city possible. The critics also believed that the process of making a sustainable city is possible by making more efficient building. According to the critics most of the buildings in this developed world, are responsible for the emission of the carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide, emission, is there because of the cooling, powering and the heating buildings. If the buildings are made in a better as well as in an insulated way then it would not have been very difficul t for the world to create sustainable cities, where there can be a quality of life, which would help the people living in the cities. Another way of making the cities sustainable is by preserving the historical structures and the architecture. Most of the cities due to the growing population could preserve its culture and architecture, but if they could preserve it then they could actually help in creating a sustainable city for the both the present and the future generation. There is although, another view, through which it is possible to look at this particular point and that is unless the population of the whole world is reduced it is impossible to make the cities sustainable. According to critics the sustainability of the world or rather the cities are affected because of the growth of the population. The growth of the population led to the huge consumption of the natural resources and the fossil fuels, which has prevented the sustainable growth of the urban areas. Another most important argument that is being put forward by the critics against the possibility of making a sustainable city is the fact that most of the developing countries in the world provide a poor working condition to the worker. The working conditions are not only poor but at the same time, they are oppressive and dangerous. The sustainable development of the city based on the brain-based, economy, the infrastructure, the educational and the health care facility that is being given to the people and the social services that is being provided to the people. In most of the developing countries, the infrastructure is such that the social services and the health care facility that is being given to the people are poor; things like proper sanitation facilities are not there in the developing countries. Therefore, it could be reason behind the impossibility that is associated with making cities sustainable, according to few critics and scholars. If most of the cities in the world, be it the developing countries or the developed countries; do not have proper facility to treat the sewage and solid waste, then creating a sustainable city will again be an impossible thing for the human kind. Making a sustainable city not only requires clean air, food and water but it is lot more than that. The making of the sustainable city requires good amount of investment, of time and money as well as the investment of the energy at the same time. In the 20th century, such types of investment were readily acceptable and such a kind of investment occurred at the same time. Now, with the change in time, things have changed a lot as well. Today, people have forgotten to invest their money in these things and thus it has become impossible to create a sustainable city for both the future and the present generation. There is another important thing that is required for the sustainable growth of the cities and that is the good governance. Most of the critics are of the opinion that the developing countries have an instable political environment that could not help in creating a sustainable government, which would help in creating the sustainable cities. Gone is the world of exploration, replaced instead by the quick fixes of sit coms, movies, video games and on-line chat rooms. Poetic language and the art of communication is lost to vulgarity and coarseness. Heroic stories of wonder and enchantment gather dust while spandex clad wrestlers in the ring of artifice and glitz become the Titans of our children's fantasy lives. Although we can make room for the pleasures of simple entertainment, we canno t use it as the sustenance for our children's imaginations. Surviving influences with sense of self Essay Although many people tend to think that media and advertising are two of the worst culprits that are destroying good moral values, what is right and wrong has always been a subject of debate in history depending on who perceives it. The cowboys and the Indians both had reasons to live in the same territory but had to fight for their rights. Western conventional medicine dominated the east but Westerners use Chinese Traditional Medicine. It is not very easy to see what is right or wrong and even if one does perceive what is correct, there is no guarantee that he or she will do the proper thing. One’s strength of character and moral values are needed to establish a sense of self that will fight the bad influence that society usually promotes. It is very easy to influence someone with poor a poor sense of self. Convincing words and vivid pictures leading to a certain desirable outcome can easily sway someone who lacks backbone to do what is being asked. The mind can easily form pictures of what could be desirable and easily sway one to making decisions – whether good or bad. Poor self-esteem can assist advertising in making false promises. In the article entitled, â€Å"In the Shadow of the Image,† written by Stuart and Elizabeth Ewen (2006 p. 207), the authors mentioned the disillusionment of Frank Miller who watched John Wayne movies and got influenced into taking up his own cause against Southeast Asians who simply triggered a bullet on his chest to his dismay. The movies he had watched were meant to boost its audience’s self-esteem but it went further to influence Miller’s way of thinking and perception of other cultural minorities. Due to his poor knowledge of who he really is, he has failed to show respect for others and ultimately based his ego on the outcome of his own cause. According to the Ewens, he felt betrayed by the images he had seen. Miller failed to identify himself properly and now feels depressed that he let himself be influenced by Hollywood. He does not realize that it was his own choices that led him to act on film influences. Low self-esteem can be infectious. A person with poor sense of self will rely on a group of people with the same problem to acknowledge a false common factor. Being part of a group can be advantageous to boost self-esteem but it can go toward the wrong direction if the group exercises its strength by being prejudiced. Biases can take the form of skin color, the way people talk, or even how people move. Vertamae Smart-Grasvenor’s essay entitled, â€Å"When You Meet Estella Smart, You Been Met! † shows how her grandmother actually overcame the problem of prejudice by relying on her sense of self to perceive what is right and wrong. Instead of giving up eating rice to avoid being the butt of many jokes, she decided to â€Å"get rid of nothing that was worth keeping† and continued to eat rice and talk like a Southerner in a northern community. (232) People with poor self-image tend to cover this flaw by making it look like they are superior compared to others simply because they are â€Å"in† or part of a larger group. These people tend to look down on others who do not think the same way that they do. Estella Smart had been the object of many condescending comments because she refused to embrace the impractical way of life that her northern community encouraged. Comments such as, â€Å"Think she is something! She ain’t no better than nobody else! † (232) are obvious signs of jealousy that could have hurt a person who did not find strength in his own identity. However, for people like Estella Smart who know themselves better, gossiping people can say whatever they want for all they care. Another effect of advertising that is truly pushed by poor self-esteem is the fact that people tend to cover up their feelings of insecurity by buying products to make them feel better. Advertisements prey on people’s insecurities and poor self-image to entice its audiences to use their products to boost their self-worth. The Ewens mention a student, Gina Concepcion, who works so hard in their local supermarket just so she can be fashionable and wear Jordache clothing. She thinks that the pants may be very expensive but they â€Å"fit better and she fits better. † (207). Gina obviously bases her self-esteem on how people think about her and her pants. She has become enslaved by her insecurity to belong and had fallen prey to Jordache’s advertising scheme. Advertising and media can be very powerful influences in everyday decision-making but the real root of the problem lies on one’s sense of self. Most people easily fall into the trap of commercials because these ads know how to use their products to cover up for whatever insecurities a person has. If a child had grown up knowing that he has the power to choose what is good and bad for him (instead of grown ups simply telling him to follow instructions), then more people would probably be more resistant to promotional schemes. Knowing that one has the power to direct one’s life is essential to help people fight for what they believe in. Without the realization that destiny is simply in one’s hands, it becomes easy for humans to get depressed and be suffocated by the many crimes that can often be read on newspapers or seen or heard on the news. Not knowing that one has the power to change things or fight against what is wrong can ultimately develop fear in one’s psyche which has led to numerous suicide attempts and successes. Beverly Jackson’s suicide incident that the Ewens mentioned, happened only because the woman felt helpless and hopeless. If she had enough sense of self to know that there are many ways to protect and empower one’s self against crime, then she could be still alive by now. Advertising and pop culture can only devour people who have poor self-image. More often than not, commercialism’s effects on its victims may not be detected because the brain has been deceived to see great solutions to the insecurities that people have. Only people who have been raised to know that they have the distinct power to put direction in their lives by using their choices can inevitably resist the temptations that pop culture has in store for every one. Estella Smart knew this and overcame being a domestic helper (which she despised terribly) by learning how to sew during the evenings after her work. (Smart-Grasvenor 232) It all boils down to how people have been raised. Advertising and media have been goons that continue to affect man’s choices and ways of life. However, the reason behind this success rests on poor self-image. If people learn to develop the power that is within them and use them to do what is good, then pop culture would diminish. A Critique of ABA Productions’ Essay

Mystery and adventure unravels excitingly as they meet lost boys (and girls) who are serious about being children for the rest of their lives, Indians under the leadership of Princess Tiger Lily, mermaids who can dance gracefully, and terribly funny pirates! Captain Hook, the leader of these buccaneers is Peter Pan’s most formidable opponent and almost succeeded in eliminating all of Neverland. But of course, Peter Pan saved the day! Considering that the play’s creative core is heavy with renowned professionals from all over the world, it probably took its Executive Producer-Director, Matthew Gregory, years of happy thoughts and tons of fairy dust to make his team create such a cohesive yet vibrant production that seemed to be perfect in all aspects. Gregory wonderfully intertwined very good lighting, ingenuous stage design (which was imported from China), spectacular effects, innovative technology and impressive music (composed by famous composer, Karl Jenkins) to heighten or downplay the mood of every scene. Tracy Nunnally, the flying director, proved his prowess as the flying actors glided on and off the stage with comfort and ease that seemed to be just a natural thing to do. The make-up and costumes (especially for the mermaids who can walk with their fins) brought out the very nature of each character and drew the audience even more into the story. Praises to Elaine Wade and Carol Bloomfield for such beautiful and imaginative costumes! Thirteen year old Ryutaro Yanagita (playing Peter Pan) amazed everyone with his relentless energy and stunts on the ground and in the air. The choreography of popular Filipino choreographer, Kitty Aguila-Cortes, required a lot of running, jumping and break dancing moves but you will never hear this boy catch his breath†¦ only the audience does. One’s spirit cannot help but join him fly as he zooms beyond the stage and above the crowd. Only one character in the play seemed to lack enough humor or rapport with the audience – Nana, the nurse dog. The actor portrayed the role well but one is left thinking if there were scenes that should have focused on this character’s antics to add more spice to the fuss. Peter Pan’s message is the answer to man’s quest for eternal youth: Keep your happy thoughts alive in you heart and have faith in yourself and others. ABA Productions effectively conveyed this theme as every person in the audience felt so much happier and youthful after the play. This is one spectacular and powerful show that no child or child at heart should ever miss!

The cereal industry is highly competitive with numerous businesses competing for an increased market share. The cereal industry is influenced by customer spending and customer lifestyle. In recent years, consumer behaviour has altered with customers becoming more health conscious. As a result of this, business within the cereal industry have introduced new products and modified existing products to appeal to health conscious customers. Based on research conduct, the following trends were identified within the cereal industry: Consumer behaviour changes Health conscious customers The main businesses within the cereal industry are Kelloggs, Nestlà ©, Weetabix, Flahavans and Odlums. Breakfast apart from being a necessity for breaking the fast, it is also seen as a social ritual amongst the majority of cultures around the world.  [1]   Three main trends emerge from an analysis of the industry: Acquisitions, Automation and Consolidation. The nature of the cereal industry is oligopoly as there are just a few firms dominating the industry. (Flahavans).The breakfast cereal industry can be divided into two categories; hot breakfast cereals and Ready to Eat (RTE). The key drivers to operate in this industry were identified as: Reformulation of nutritional ingredient, Product differentiation, Contracts for raw materials, Economies of Scale and Creative advertising. The industry as a whole has an abundance external macro environment factors which are clearly seen in the PESTLE. Porters five forces identified medium barriers to entry, threat of substitutions and supplier power, but highlighted high buyer power and competitive rivalry. From using strategic mapping it was emphasised that players in the industry modernised /changed their strategies to respond to key trends in the industry. From analysing the five key players in the industry, it is clear that all have similar product diversification, product development (Ansoff growth matrix) Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats(SWOT Framework). Industry Landscape There were three key trends found from the players in the cereal industry. Kelloggs have consolidated 42 business websites into one website in order to give a clearer brand identity and to enhance the customer experience. In relation to automation, these players currently use technological advanced machinery to aid them in production and packaging. Finally in May 2012, 60% of shares from the Weetabix Food Company have been acquired by Chinas Bright Food Group while the remaining 40% is owned by Lion Capital. From these trends, there are issues that affect these players, in terms of market saturation and fluctuating prices for wheat and oats. These are potential threats for this industry as reported by Business Insights which states; cereal products have reached a level of saturation in many Western markets, so adding value and following consumer desires will be key to successful product lines. In order to combat this market saturation, businesses need to research, understand and acknowledge consumers requirements. The fluctuating prices of oats and wheat could affect each business within the cereal industry. The price fluctuations are a result of difficulties experienced during the growing seasonal period. Rising prices due to increasing costs for logistics and ingredients are primarily going to affect the breakfast cereal industry and its key players in the future. Cereal products could be sourced globally; however, there is a decline in international cereal production due to weather conditions  [2]  . If this continues, it could lead to cereal prices escalating and increases being passed down the distribution channel. There is increasing pressure for new product development amongst the industries key players. This could potentially increase market share and enhance revenue for the niche players such as Flahavans and Odlums, while allowing market leaders such as Kelloggs the opportunity to prevent smaller businesses from obtaining market growth. There is an increase in health conscious customers and in the future, this may define the product lines produced by the key players. From the acquisition of Weetabix, Bright Food Group has vowed to globally expand the Weetabix business by entering the growing breakfast cereal market within Asia. Changes to food consumption patterns within Asia have resulted in businesses entering Asian regions and selling food and beverages to consumers. Nationally, the cereal industry is worth à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬200 million per year with a profit between 40 45%. In relation to the current market position of these players, Kelloggs would be classed as the leader due to a 44% market share. With Nestle and Weetabix as the market followers, these businesses have a sizeable market share and remain competitive within this industry. The niche players, Flahavans and Odlums, are not as profitable as competitors, particularly Odlums who do not provide an extensive range of products. Competitive rivalries could arise between these industry players, as all competitors have similar products aiming at similar target markets. The threat of substitutes is also an issue for these players; as there is a rise in own brand products, such as Dunnes Stores and Tesco. These products are being introduced into the market due to the changing consumer spending habits. As this industry could be seen as oligopolistic, the power over suppliers and buyer could potentially increase, however for the niche players, the competition could intensify. Generally the cereal industry targets family oriented markets. In relation to Kelloggs and Nestle, they could be seen to target children, as these players introduce characters to their brands in order for the children to be attracted to these products. Weetabix, Flahavans and Odlums target mature audiences which can be seen to be under the family orientated market. For each key player, they must hold competitive advantage in order to sustain the market. The threshold resources that any player should have to operate within this industry include; finance, customer loyalty, brand awareness and a wide product range. Unique resources, such as Flahavans and Odlums, are particularly focused on the Irish aspects of the product. This involves the methods of producing the product and jobs that are created within the country. Irish consumers are value driven, however Irish products are important to these consumers. In previous years, Kelloggss held a very dominant position within the industry, however this has changed substantially as more competitors have entered the market and have impacted the profit obtained by Kelloggs. In 2010, there was a net income rise of Kelloggss, which has since fallen from $1.2 billion to $961 million and emphasises a dramatic decrease. In 2012, the share price of the business was volatile as it declined to $46.33 in July, however increased to an acceptable price of approximately $60 in December. The size of Kelloggs reduces the threat of a takeover occurring and exiting the market would not be foreseeable for Kelloggs. Kelloggs use of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is at the forefront when communicating with customers. Nestle continuously attempt to improve their CSR identity within the eyes of the public. Bright Food Group generated revenues of approximately  £7.5 billion last year which indicates it has a large resource base to expand the Weetabix brand into more foreign markets. The acquisition of Weetabix would indicate that there is a high demand for cereal products globally as well as within its existing markets. The Weetabix brand has a long association with the British and Irish markets and has successfully reflected a positive brand image. However, the recent acquisition could have a positive and negative impact as it could be viewed as the loss of another indigenous company to a foreign multinational and may dilute the brand value. As Flahavans is a privately owned family operated business and similar to Weetabix, is not listed on any stock exchange. Flahavans is an established brand and retains the majority of the market share in relation to hot cereal breakfast in Ireland. This brand has a positive image among Irish customers and assisted the expansion into markets such as the UK and US. Flahavans is associated with Bord Bia and outlines the nutritional value of eating porridge as part of a healthy balanced diet. As the business is proud of its heritage and is a small player within the industry, the possibility of an acquisition may be unattractive to an established player. Odlums is part of the Origin Enterprise Group, which is listed on the Irish Stock Exchange and experienced an increased share price within the last year. The Odlums brand is well known within Ireland, primarily for their baking products. It could be perceived that the public have less recognition for the porridge range. The brand image is viewed positively and is also associated with Bord Bia. Within the cereal industry, there are certain aspects which could affect key players in the future. In terms of Kelloggs, they have primarily grown through merger and acquisitions. If all the key players follow this trend and grow like Kelloggs, they could possibly maintain market share growth. Further brand building of key players, could allow for growth in new divisions, for example Weetabix introducing a new range of biscuits. The majority of dominating businesses have a strong portfolio of products with great brand identity amongst its market share. If the key players continue to invest and grow their brand portfolio, it would be expected to have a positive long-term effect on those businesses. There is a possibility of a new pecking order in terms of the hot breakfast cereal market segment. At present, Flahavans is the market leader in this category. HRM Strategies Nestles mergers and acquisitions provides the business with a wider selection of employees which can be used strategically to further develop the companys competitive advantage. However, this method may not be feasible as employees may feel their opinions to be underappreciated and lack participation with front line decisions. In the case of Weetabix, their use of motivational goals drives their use of HRM, which furthers their competitive advantage by providing a recognised and admirable work environment, which could be then used strategically to attract additional talented candidates. In comparison to its competitors, Flavaghans is a considerably smaller company, mainly because of its family ethos. These sorts of companies generally limit new additions of staffing in order to reduce costs. However with the utilisation of their flat hierarchy which enables all departments to work together closely, this allows for a competitive advantage, which does not directly affect necessary recruitment and selection. Power: Nestles power structure is very hierarchical, many field employees feel like progression is limited and not balanced for all employees. However when we consider their previous paths to this power (mergers and acquisitions) we can interpret their power drive as continuous and dedicated. New Product Services: Research and development is an integral part within the Nestle company as they look to introduce product development within all of the categories that it positions its brand. This is clearly evident within the company as they employ 4,500 people globally within its RD departments as well as using external research provided by scientists, doctors who work within world renowned universities. This aspect of building bridges externally allows the company to further innovate within the area such of nutritional and healthy foods as well as numerous other categories.
